Well, if you are from Southern California, you have heard of the Carmageddon, which is the 53-hour shutdown of a 10 mile stretch of the 405 Freeway between the 101 and the 10 Freeways on the Westside of LA. The shutdown will begin tonight at midnight and is planned to last until 5 AM Monday, July 18th. If you haven't already planned out how you will manage this imminent event, here are 10 possibilities:
10. You can ignore it and be caught up in what promises to be the best and biggest of traffic jams in ages... who knows, maybe you'll be on TV when the news choppers fly by. If you do this, though, please bring your camera and take good pics to post on Redgage because I'd like to see them!
9. Fly Jet Blue. Apparently, they are offering flights between Burbank and Long Beach Airports for a measly 4 dollars for this Saturday only! Likely, these deals have been swapped up, but you can try.
8. Leave town. You can avoid the area completely (of course, many others could be planning this as well). From the Valley, Santa Barbara, Lake Tahoe, or the Bay Area aren't TOO far and may take less time to get to than crossing the affected area. From the Inland Empire, Big Bear or Vegas are always options. In the OC, San Diego is a nearby getaway.
7. Stay home and watch the chaos ensue. Turn on the boob tube or watch the traffic maps online change from green to yellow to orange to red to... You could even invite your friends over and host a Carmageddon party. Drink a Mulholland Bridge bomb for me!
6. Public transportation? I know, almost sounds like a foreign word to me too... No, not buses! They'll be in the same predicament that everyone else will be in. How about the trains/Metrolink? I know they aren't the best system, but maybe if people actually use it more, they can justify expanding the system and finally building the high-speed train they've been talking about for decades.
5. Grill out. Ahh, this weekend will have perfect weather for grilling out. Kebabs, ribs, or a juicy Ribeye sound perfect for a nice summer BBQ!
4. Watch a movie - If you are caught up with the series, you can finally watch the last movie of the Harry Potter series, which comes out today. Or, some theaters are showing Parts 1 and 2 together if you wish. Or if you really want to relive it, rent all the previous movies and have a marathon session.
3. The OC Fair - Yes, the Orange County Fair starts today. Fridays have $2 food deals 12pm to 4pm. Bob Dylan plays tonight in concert (tix cost extra, but fair admission is included). They will have the return of the ice sculpture exhibit which will keep you cool. Oh, and the fried foods! Deep-Fried Kool Aid and Deep-Fried Brownies are some of the promised new items.
2. Get outside and use your legs, Biped! We weren't born with 2 legs for driving! Check out your local area for places to hike or go to the beach! Griffith Park is beautiful. I've heard the Crystal Cove in Orange County is tops for hiking as well. Most of us Californians take our beaches for granted (myself included), so take advantage of this opportunity to get some fresh air.
1. Watch our US Women's Soccer squad play in the finals of the World Cup! Sunday 11:45 AM PST. The last 2 games have been extremely exciting. They will be playing vs. Japan, who has inspired their nation after the havoc caused by the devastating earthquake and tsunamis in March. Both will be fighting tooth-and-claw. It should be one for the ages.
Lastly... good luck! Let me know how it works out for you...
